Dave was born in a Montreal suburb, eventually attending Macdonald College (McGill) for his BSc (1984) and MSc (1987) before moving to Carleton in Ottawa for a PhD (1991). A postdoc at Western was followed by a sabbatical replacement position at Oregon State (1993-4), contracts with Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) and Ministry of Natural Resources in Ottawa (1994-5), contracts with CWS in Saskatoon (1996-8), and finally a position in Biology at Acadia. His retirement in mid-2020 could not have been timed better, and more joy followed with a 6-year renewal of his federal research funding, meaning no teaching or admin but continued rewards of student supervision. His research has mostly been on tree swallows and Leach’s storm-petrels, but as his publications attest (https://www.acadiau.ca~dshutler/cv.htm), he still doesn’t know what he wants to do.
